About Depression

Depression is an extremely complex disease, and no one knows with one hundred percent certainty what causes it. In many cases, it is brought on by major life changes or experiences. What we do know is the brain waves we are exhibiting control how we feel, not the other way round. The brain is alive with electrical activity and is responsible for our thoughts, our emotions, and our behaviors. For it to function optimally, the different parts of the brain must talk to one another effectively. This brain communication is achieved by transmitting electrical signals along neurons that connect one area of the brain to another. These signals are called neuronal oscillations, or brain waves.

When our brain waves are out of balance, there can result in a corresponding emotional or neuro-physical imbalance such as depression. Put simply, it’s the brain wave instabilities that can cause these conditions, therefore to correct the condition means changing the brain waves. This can be achieved by medication, or by non-invasive, non-medicinal treatment such as neurofeedback—brainwave training.

How Neurofeedback helps Depression

Brain waves determine behavior and mood, and through neurofeedback, patients learn to “quiet” their minds on demand by slowing down their brain waves. This is achieved by reinforcing positive changes in brain wave activity thus creating more permanent connections in the brain. We start by recording your existing brain wave activity using painless sensors placed on the head, which gives our doctors information about why you may be having clinical symptoms based on what is happening in your brain. Neurophysiological over-arousal or under-arousal can contribute to why you may be manifesting symptoms of depression. Neurofeedback therapy is the process of training the brain to instead exhibit more desirable brain wave patterns that will reduce, or even eliminate the symptoms of depression. The training is accomplished via experiencing visual stimulation that darkens and lightens as brainwave patterns change. By adjusting the brightness with your brainwaves you retrain then and engage the brain. Over the course of the neurofeedback treatment, neuroplasticity creates permanent positive changes in the brain.

How to get Started

Take the first step toward freedom from depression by contacting a neurofeedback practitioner in your area. Your practitioner will complete an assessment to determine if neurofeedback therapy is the right course of treatment for your depression. They will walk you through the entire neurotherapy process to give you a full understanding of what you can expect.
