About Anxiety
Anxiety is a normal emotion in humans. Most people experience some form of anxiety in their lives, especially when faced with a stressful situation. It’s how our brain naturally reacts to a perceived “danger”.
However, when the symptoms of anxiety start to interfere with your life it could be signs of an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are the most common form of emotional disorder and can affect anyone at any age.
The presence of these 5 symptoms could indicate that anxiety has become a problem for you or your child:
- Excessive worrying that is disproportionate to the events that trigger it. To be considered excessive, the worrying must occur on most days for about 6 months, and be difficult to control.
- A constant feeling of restlessness – feeling “on edge” for no apparent reason.
- Physical symptoms – racing pulse, sweaty palms, shaky hands and dry mouth.
- Trouble sleeping, or always waking in the night, not being able to fall back asleep.
- Social avoidance – feeling anxious or fearful about upcoming social situations and avoiding them because of these fears.
